Venice

After Padua, we drove to Venice and returned our car at the airport and then finished our vacation in Venice
After a nearly tearful goodbye at Covo dell’Arimanno, we returned our rental car at Marco Polo Airport
Our first sight of Venice
Our first canal near Fondamente Nove
We dumped our bags and hurried immediately to Murano and had a lovely but very overpriced lunch
An old clock tower and a modern glass sculpture on Murano
The west part of the two islands that form Venice proper
Our first gondola – and as close as we got to riding in one
Our first gondolier
This is where we plan to live when we move to Venice – a very modest palazzo
Church of San Giorgio Maggiore on Giudecca was designed by Palladio
Waiting for riders
Piazza San Marco – we did not like the pigeons
Basilica di San Marco
The required visit to a café in San Marco – it was damp, freezing cold, we hated the pigeons, and those 2 glasses of wine cost about $40. The music was lovely though.
Lunch on our first full day in Venice was at this restaurant in the inner courtyard
The Bridge of Sighs – we got to cross it just like prisoners during our visit to the Doge’s Palace
A street musician near Campo San Stefano – I am not sure what the instrument is, but it was lovely
One of the best gelaterie in Venice – we had a light dinner there
Even in Venice, kids love puddles
Venice in the rain
We enjoyed the touches of the modern world in Venice
We visited Venice during the full moon and a rainy period, so the tides were high and Piazza di San Marco turned into a lake every night
The Lion of Venice
We really were there
OOOOO YUCK!!!!!
June 2 is Italian Republic Day so all the flags were flying: EU, Italy, Venice
Gondola traffic jam
Our last Venice lunch was at this restaurant – in the back right is our lunch’s brother
Our calle – the yellow sign marks Albergo Barbaria, our home in Venice – next time a palazzo please
Outside
Inside
As close as I could get William to Piazza San Marco for a last look
Venice from the vaporetto to Lido
Gondoliers practicing for racing
The vaporetto stop at Lido
Venice sunset
At the well in Campo della Santa Giusta Detta Barbaria (our campo)
Sun rising over Murano as we go to the airport
Last look at San Michele, the cemetery island
Clamdiggers in the Laguna
